Home Security Equipment Types

There are a lot of options when it comes to home security equipment. This is not just in reference to the various camera and alarm models you can pick from. Before you can even decide on specific kinds of home security devices, you need to determine the general type of equipment you would want to have.

Monitored or Non-Monitored

You can choose to attach home security equipment and opt to monitor it from inside your house. These days however, you also have the choice to obtain the services of a third party monitoring company. This second option will permit a monitoring company to receive alarm signals from your home in case there is a break in. Company employees can then contact your house to verify if there is a problem. They may also contact the authorities in your behalf in the event that they suspect that there is something seriously wrong.

For a lot of home owners, monitored systems are the holy grail of home security devices. This option makes alarms and cameras more than just showy or noisy tools to scare burglars away. Monitored equipment however would most certainly be more expensive than non-monitored ones.

Internal or External

Depending on your budget, you may opt for both internal and external types of home security equipment. External devices can help deter burglars even before they are able to approach your home. These may include cameras, sensors, lights and alarms. Of course, items installed externally should be heat and weather resistant. Reputable security companies put appropriate distinctions between internal and external devices.

The home security devices you use indoors can be the same as your external ones. The only difference is that they are made for internal use and may not be able to weather external use. Aside from the typical security components, make sure the internal portion of your home is also secured by durable locks and bolts.

Hardwired or Wireless

Hardwired home security equipment are connected to a house’s wiring. This is a highly reliable system but can be a chore to install. This is why homeowners often choose this option only when their homes are still in the construction phase. This way, they don’t have to worry about tearing off parts of walls to install connections or hide the new wires.

For people with pre-made houses, wireless home security devices may be more appropriate. These items can simply be mounted with no complicated wiring required. They may either draw power from nearby electric outlets or they may have their own battery packs. Naturally though, these systems need to be checked more often to ensure that they aren’t low on power.

Picking the right home security equipment type is not as simple as it seems. You do have to make the extra effort though to ensure that you have the right type of system in place. Nothing can be more important than your home and family’s security.
