How to Prevent Stretch Marks
A lot of people would fall in line to learn to prevent stretch marks. After all, prevention is always far better than having to treat a condition. The question is whether preventing stretch marks really is possible.
Deciding to Prevent
It’s clear why preventing stretch marks is an agenda for some. Stretch marks are actually scars that appear as white or silver streaks on the skin. Once you get these streaks, they may not completely disappear even with treatment. For some people, too many streaks can be a source of embarrassment that can lower self-confidence.
First of all, you should know that it isn’t easy to stop stretch marks before they happen. There are no clear scientifically proven procedures that will tell you what to do to thwart this cosmetic problem. Furthermore, each individual is unique so the appearance of the streaks will differ from one person to another.
The only absolute way to prevent stretch marks is to not gain weight. This is because the scars come out when a person gains weight rapidly. It is nearly impossible though to keep one’s weight constant. At some point in a person’s life, rapid weight increase is inevitable. Everyone for example goes through the adolescent stage. Even if an individual is not fat during his teen years, he may experience a growth spurt that may still lead to stretch marks. Lots of women also become pregnant which is another way to get stretch marks.
Prevention Options
So if there are no set rules for preventing stretch marks, what can be done? The best approach is to use your common sense. For this condition, common sense dictates that you will probably have a better chance of averting silver streaks if you keep healthy. Of course, healthy habits will not guarantee total prevention. What healthy habits can do however is assure you that you have a far better chance to prevent stretch marks with them than if you had bad habits.
Hence the most basic way of possibly preventing the streaks is through exercise and a nutritious diet. Drinking lots of water is part of the equation too. You may also want to keep away from smoking, too much stress, lack of sleep and excessive alcohol drinking. Healthy habits make a lot of sense because they can help keep the skin elastic and strong.
Some people may also opt to use vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements. These can be taken orally or applied on the skin. Again, there is no guarantee that these will work for every individual. You can only expect supplemental nourishment of your skin. If you are pregnant however, you should take the time to evaluate a product for preventing stretch marks. Make sure your doctor says that the ingredients are safe for you to use.
You may or may not be able to prevent stretch marks entirely. It is always best however to do what you can with possible preventive measures.
