Liposuction Procedure- How They Do It
You might be thinking of undergoing a liposuction procedure. Before you even march up to a doctor’s clinic though, you should find out a bit about it on your own. Knowing the basics will help you ask the right questions when you meet with your liposuction surgeon.
Liposuction Defined
A liposuction procedure is considered a cosmetic process. This is because it is not used to treat serious medical conditions or as a solution to weight loss. People who opt for liposuction are those who want to improve localized areas of their bodies that carry some fat. In other words, it is used to tone or shape some parts of the body, such as the face, stomach, hips and thighs, with stubborn fat.
Not everyone can be allowed to undergo a liposuction procedure. For starters, it cannot be performed on individuals who are overweight or obese. Candidates for liposuction must be close to their ideal weights. The procedure should also be considered only as a last resort when the localized fat cannot be eliminated through exercise and proper diet.
Age is also a factor in determining the fitness of a candidate for a liposuction procedure. Older individuals may not be deemed fit candidates because of their skin quality. The lack of skin elasticity may make your appearance look worse after liposuction. Younger people may fare better with liposuction because they still maintain elastic skin.
Candidates should also be physically and emotionally fit. People with serious medical conditions like hypertension and diabetes may not be good candidates. Your liposuction surgeon would have to carefully evaluate your physical condition before giving you the go signal.
Emotional fitness or stability may be harder to measure. What good surgeons typically look for however are individuals who have realistic expectations. It is also important for candidates to desire to undergo the procedure for themselves and not for others. A liposuction procedure will not be able to give anyone a perfect body. It will also not drastically change the way other people view you.
The Procedure
There are many different procedures for liposuction. The one used on you will depend on the area you want to be suctioned and on the clinic or practitioner handling you. In any case, there is a general basic procedure that is commonly followed.
Before the liposuction procedure, anesthesia will be administered. General anesthesia may sometimes be used depending on a patient’s case. In a lot of cases though, local anesthesia will do. This may be used with a sedative for clients who may be too nervous or anxious.
The procedure itself is not as invasive as other surgical methods. A very small incision is made on the area with the fat to be removed. Through the incision, a hollow tube called a cannula is inserted. The tube is attached to a suction pump that breaks down fat and removes it. For the safety of the client, replacement fluids will be administered.
After the liposuction procedure, a client would have to undergo a recovery period. This will not be the same for all individuals. In general though, one can move about and perform light tasks after a few days. The treated area however will not fully recover until after a few weeks. Some normal side effects after liposuction may include bruising, swelling and some pain.
This is a simplified account of a basic liposuction procedure. Now that you are familiar with it though, you are now better equipped to face your liposuction surgeon for an initial consultation.
